The Victron Skylla-i 24/80(3) is a modern and powerful charger built for tough environments, making it ideal for demanding applications like marine, off-grid, and industrial use. Capable of providing 80A charge current for 24V systems, this charger delivers performance that extends battery life, ensures efficiency, and reduces maintenance needs.
One of the standout features of the Skylla-i 24/80(3) is its ability to operate in synchronised parallel configurations. Multiple chargers can be linked together via the CAN bus interface using RJ45 UTP cables, offering a scalable solution for larger systems. However, note that two-output and three-output chargers cannot be paralleled with each other.
The charger’s variable absorption time ensures that lead-acid batteries receive the right charge. For shallow discharges, the charger keeps the absorption time short to avoid overcharging, while for deep discharges, the absorption time is automatically extended to ensure full charging.
To prevent damage from excessive gassing during fast charging, the BatterySafe mode limits the rate of voltage increase once the gassing voltage is reached. This feature helps safeguard the battery and ensures a more reliable charging process.
The Storage mode reduces the float voltage if the battery remains idle for 24 hours, minimizing gassing and corrosion. Once a week, the voltage is increased to refresh the battery, preventing sulphation and stratification, common causes of premature battery failure.
For systems where battery temperature fluctuates, the temperature compensation feature uses a battery temperature sensor to automatically reduce the charging voltage as the battery temperature rises. This helps prevent overheating and ensures efficient charging, especially for sealed lead-acid batteries.
The voltage sense function ensures that any voltage losses due to cable resistance are compensated for, allowing the battery to receive the proper charge voltage, even in large systems with long cable runs.
The Skylla-i 24/80(3) can operate on both AC and DC supply, allowing for AC-DC and DC-DC operation, making it versatile in different power setups. Additionally, the charger can serve as a power supply when batteries or large buffer capacitors are unavailable, providing stable voltage to other equipment.
This charger is also Li-Ion (LiFePO4) ready, allowing simple on/off control via a relay or more advanced voltage and current control through the CAN bus. This flexibility is ideal for LiFePO4 batteries.
